WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service will observe Labor Day on Monday, September 7. All Post Office locations will be closed. Regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Tuesday, September 8.

The U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the art and life of Linda McCartney (1941–1998), a pioneering photographer and animal rights activist who was a pivotal figure in the vegetarianism movement, at a first-day-of-issue ceremony for stamps featuring her photography. All attendees must RSVP to attend the ceremony at the museum.

SOUTH BERWICK, ME — The U.S. Postal Service honored Sarah Orne Jewett with a stamp today at the Sarah Orne Jewett Literary House in the town she would call home her entire life. The stamp features an original portrait of the author with the Maine coast as background and a ray of sunshine, evoking a scene from her best-known work, “The Country of the Pointed Firs.”
